Drinks driver downed a bottle of Prosecco and then smashed her Audi into a van at a red light on the way to a friend's house

A drinks driver crashed into the back of a delivery truck at a red light after drinking a full bottle of Prosecco – it had doubled.

Chloe Harris, 23, was driving her Audi A1 from the Sky Bar in Bury to her friend’s house when she ran into the back of the Renault van.

The driver of the van had a neck pain, the Manchester Magistrates’ Court heard.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they understood that she was intoxicated because of her “fuzzy speech, unsteady feet and glassy eyes.”

Harris of Heywood, Rochdale, gave a positive alcohol test result on the roadside and was taken to the police station where she took another two breath tests.

The lowest level was 76 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of breath – twice the legal limit of 35 milligrams.

The sales rep pleaded guilty to exceeding the alcohol limit and was fined £ 500 by Manchester JPs.

Harris, 23, was fined £ 500

Prosecutor Tina Cunnane told the court that there was a traffic collision on June 14 this year at the corner of Angouleme Road and Manchester Road in Bury.

“The defendant collided with a Renault van and the driver suffered from pain and neck discomfort,” she said.

“The police were present and from talking to her it was clear that she was drunk.

“She spoke indistinctly, unsteadily on her feet and her eyes were glazed over.

“The driver of the delivery truck was at the red light and the defendant had a passenger in her vehicle.”

Ms. Cunnane added that Harris was given a positive sample on the curb of her breath and taken to the police station, where it took another two readings, the lowest being 76 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of breath.

The legal limit is 35 milligrams.

In her police interview, she told officers that she went to Ramsbottom Cricket Club and then went to the Sky Bar in Bury.

She said she was driving from there and was going to her friend’s house when she crashed into the van.

She confirmed that she had had a full bottle of Prosecco and when asked if she could have exceeded the limit, she said “no”.

Harris is said to have no previous convictions.

Harris did not appear to be represented and told the court, “First I would like to apologize – it is totally atypical for me.

“I’ve been driving for five years and had a completely clean driver’s license.

“It was really just a stupid mistake.”

Harris of Knowl Hill View was fined £ 500 and sentenced to £ 50 victim surcharge and court costs of £ 85.

In addition, her license was revoked for 19 months.
