Construction of roads in Pascagoula creates a major headache for a business owner. WLOX

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (WLOX) A lot of people on Market Street in Pascagoula look at the construction as an indicator of progress. However, to some, it’s an indication of an upcoming headache.

People such as Tommy Chamberlain who is the proprietor of Tommy’s Exquisite Detailing, says he has lost customers because of dust that is accumulating from ongoing road works.

“I want to take my vehicle down, but you have dust everywhere before your store,” told Tommy Chamberlain. “Sometimes I’m sure you’re closed since the doors are shut. Doors are shut because I’m unable enough to allow all that dust get in the garage for me to clean the automobiles. There are only two spaces here. Therefore, when I had the doors open , dust is will be flying into the room, so I needed to close those doors.”

Another issue arises when he has to leave the vehicles in the garage to be given customers the following day.

“When I wake up early in the morning, the car is still covered in dust. I have to wash the car once more to the client,” said Chamberlain. “Say that if the customer doesn’t come there in 15 minutes, what do you think will transpire? I’ve got additional cars to tackle. I had to take the car clean, and it’s about to be cleaned. However, I have another customer I need to attend to and the car is already sprayed before the customers arrive.”

He stated that a situation such as this one should have been addressed when planning the project.

“Someone should have made my business as a participant in this agreement, since there’s no other company on this street which will suffer as there is no other person who does details or car washing like myself,” said Chamberlain. “I have reached out to employees and they only laugh and laugh since I’m annoyed by the troubles they’re creating for me, and they think it’s funny, however it’s just not humorous for me in any way.”

“Somebody can reach out and speak to me. This is making me feel uncomfortable here. I’m suffering a lot as well. People think that it’s funny, but it’s not. To stay in this place every day and work double time with dust and all the other things that are happening in this project. I’ve been losing money since the beginning of October on this project, and it’s unjust.”

WLOX has reached out to Pascagoula City Manager Michael Silverman, who said that road construction is scheduled to begin by mid-February.

Neck pain that is caused by bad sleeping posture Sleep position CNN

0

Editor’s Notes:Sign up for CNN’s Sleep, But Better newsletter series. The seven-part guide is full of useful tips to help you get more restful sleep.

CNN —-

Neck pain could have a variety of reasons: Stress bad posture, stress and texting injuries from activities, automobile or other accidents , and chronic diseases like fibromyalgia, just to mention some. However, there’s a third factor that you might not have thought of the way you sleep.

“Generally If you awake suffering from neck discomfort, it’s because your pillow isn’t suited to your needs or the way that you sleep in can be causing neck pain and/or both of them,” said sleep specialist Dr. Raj Dasgupta, an associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of Southern Cal’s Keck School of Medicine.

Experts advise picking a pillow that will support the natural curve of your neck which may differ to the pillow you use with your partner in bed.

“Sleeping is a personal encounter,” stated Colleen Louw who is who is a certified spinal and therapeutic pain specialist as well as representative for the American Physical Therapy Association, in an email.

“Working with physical therapists will help you identify the causes of painful exacerbations and which positions or strategies could lead to more restful night’s sleep.” Louw said.

The position of your pillow can affect the choice of a pillow.

In general sleep on either your back or side is the best to prevent neck or back discomfort, according to experts because both positions assist to keep the natural curves of your spine.

Back is the best option: The best way to sleep is to lie on your back with a pillow which allows your neck to be placed so that you’re facing straight up at your ceiling. explained.

“If the pillow isn’t fluffy enough or large, then you’ll be able to move your head, which can create some problems,” he said. “Stand on a wall and place the pillow on top of your head. Are you still looking straight? It’s not a good idea to be staring at the ceiling, or looking down. You should be parallel towards the wall. The pillow should lead to less neck pain.”

Back sleepers should try to sleep with their hands on their side. A study from 2017 found that placing one hand over the head substantially affected a person’s neck as well as shoulder discomfort.

“If you lie on your back and you have a back, consider with a firm pillow or a bolster on your knees” Louw added. “This will help to keep blood circulation moving to prevent back pain in the event that your knees are flexed during rest.”

Sleepers on the side: Sleeping on your side is okay provided you maintain your neck and head straight with your body. In order to do this you’ll require the proper pillow.

A study conducted in 2010 on side sleepers revealed that those who were sleeping on pillows made of feathers were more likely to wake up than those who sleep on latex pillows, thereby damaging their sleep. Dasgupta recommends that side sleepers use pillows that are firm to support the neck during sleep.

“If you’re a sleeper on your side it’s possible that a pillow with a firmer feel could harm your neck but it’s usually the pillow that is too soft that causes you to awake with neck pain,” Dasgupta said. “There’s always an opening between the head of your bed and your mattress, and your pillow should be used as an extra cushion.”

The use of pillows in addition to your bed can help keep the hips, shoulders, head and knees on the same level, Louw said.

“(Use) cushions between knees and at times, on your belly or chest to help rest your arm.” she advised, “(to) prevent your shoulders from rolling forward that could cause your neck to turn even while you sleep. The goal is to maintain blood flow through your joints and your nerves , which will help prevent the pain.”

No bellyflops: “The one position that we don’t recommend is lying in your stomachs,” Dasgupta said.

When you sleep on your stomach, it forces your neck to lean on one side for a long duration of time. It also forces the lower back to sag towards the back due to gravity, which leads in neck as well as back pain.

Sleepers who lie on their stomachs must do their best to shift towards sleeping with their side or back according to experts. Use a cervical pillow, which is specifically designed to hold your neck in position. Put the firm pillows, folded up blankets or bath towels, or a body pillow to the opposite the side to prevent you from falling onto your stomach when you your sleep.

How to deal with neck discomfort in the neck?

What’s the most effective course of procedure if you awake with neck discomfort?

Ice and heat:Try taking a very warm shower to relax and loosen your neck muscles. This will ease discomfort and increase your motion range, Dasgupta said. Try the ice pack, or alternate between heating pads and Ice.

“The principal thing to remember is to not use each for longer than fifteen minutes at one time,” Louw said. “But they can be used at any time.”

Massage manipulating the muscles as well as muscles in the neck may increase blood flow and ease tension in muscles, Dasgupta stated. Test different massage techniques until you can find one that suits you.

Stretch and move:While you should avoid intense activities and limit movement that cause the pain, “walking and moving around is still recommended, as the full-time bed rest can result in stiff necks and back discomfort to last more time,” Dasgupta said.

Do you have to stretch? If yes, make sure to make sure you do it gently to avoid making things more difficult. There are, however, more effective methods, Louw said.

“Gradual and paced, active movement is more effective to reduce the pain and stiffness than stretching when instructed by a medical expert or physical therapist,” she added.

Research has shown that exercise can reduce neck pain caused by sleep more effectively than other non-invasive treatments like yoga, massage, acupuncture or relaxation methods. A study in 2020 found that sleeping and mood improved for people suffering from constant neck discomfort increased workout levels.

“If the stiffness and pain are severe enough to restrict movement, you should consider using acetaminophen or Ibuprofen at the dosage recommended by your doctor. Consult your doctor to determine whether you should stay away from any of these drugs,” Dasgupta said.

What causes postpartum lower back Pain?

The expert mentioned that many physical changes may cause after birth low back pain. Preventive measures for postpartum lower Back Pain

  • Prenatal exercises that are under the supervision of a qualified physiotherapist could assist in preventing postpartum lower back discomfort.
  • Consumption of adequate supplementation with calcium as well as D3 prior to and post-delivery is beneficial.
  • Keep your posture in check prior to and post-delivery to avoid back discomfort.
  • Be aware of your diet throughout pregnancy and beware of eating food that makes you gain a significant amount of weight, so it’s easier to gain weight and get back to the weight you were at after the birth.
  • Doing postnatal exercises following delivery can help to build the back muscles in the core. Stretching for 10 minutes each day will help to improve the flexibility of your back and can also help to lose weight.
  • Do not lift heavy weights following your delivery.
  • If you are lifting your baby, ensure that you use the proper manner, and not put lots of stress upon your lower back. Make sure to bend your knees, but not your waist. Squat down, and then lift the baby using your legs if the baby is lying on the floor. Be careful not to carry your child on your back since it can cause the back discomfort.
  • When you are breastfeeding your baby, ensure you keep a cushion for your back. Additionally, instead of leaning over for the baby, gently bring your baby close to your breast.

“Use local painkillers or oral painkillers to alleviate the discomfort that comes with pregnancy. Alternately, a cold and hot compresses may put on the lower back to provide pain relief. This should be paired with postnatal exercises to aid in early rehabilitation for the post-delivery patient. Postnatal exercises should incorporate both the pelvic bone and the core exercises. While doing this ensure that you consult your physician before taking the time to do these exercises. Utilizing a abdominal binder or belt will help support your back muscles.” The expert said.

Lower back pain isn’t going to go away in one or two days If it’s persists after all at-home remedies, you must visit a doctor. If the pain continues to worsen then it could require medical care. There may be a root cause behind the pain that persists and a medical professional can identify it quickly and suggest treatment before it becomes worse.

Strikes, elections and Dominic Raab: Rishi Sunak’s headaches to come in 2023 – The Guardian

Strikes, elections and Dominic Raab: Rishi Sunak’s headaches to come in 2023

Aubrey Allegretti and Aletha Adu

PM has reinstated ‘boring government’ but smooth relations with backbenchers are unlikely to last

Rishi Sunak leaving 10 Downing Street to attend a parliamentary liaison committee on Tuesday

At the end of one of the most tumultuous years of politics in decades, Rishi Sunak is confident he has successfully managed to calm Tory MPs and – in the words of one senior aide – “bring back boring government”.

He has sought to kick some controversial pieces of legislation into the long grass, performed quick U-turns and managed to satiate a parliamentary party with a seemingly unquenchable thirst for regicide.

But smoother relations with backbenchers are unlikely to last, with some major headaches awaiting the prime minister in 2023.

Strikes

Sunak has promised “tough” legislation to clamp down on strikes by setting minimum service levels – a plan originally intended to cover rail services that will be expanded to include the NHS. Most Tory MPs are likely to support the move, but it will make for a messy showdown in parliament. Polls suggest the public overwhelmingly back striking nurses and ambulance workers, and blame the government for recent strikes over pay and conditions. Cracks have already begun to show within the Conservative party, too. Several former cabinet ministers are urging ministers to negotiate pay settlements to bring an end to industrial action in the NHS. A refusal to engage with the unions on remuneration could pave the way for more strikes, compounding Keir Starmer’s “broken Britain” attack lines and a sense setting in among voters of managed decline. Meanwhile, the GMB union refusal to participate in the independent pay review body’s assessment for next year’s recommended wage uplift could throw the whole system into chaos.

Local elections

Sunak has been lucky that the first two byelections of his premiership went relatively unnoticed as they were held in Labour strongholds. However, the one major electoral test on the horizon that he cannot ignore is the upcoming spring local elections. Senior Tories in local government expect a trouncing, which would be quite a feat, considering the last time the seats were up for grabs was May 2019. Then, Theresa May was limping towards her final months as prime minister and the Conservatives recorded losses of up to 1,300 seats. Despite the low bar, the Tories are still polling poorly nationally – hovering around the mid-20s in percentage points. Labour has not managed to get over 50% for a month, but the sense of “midterm blues” is likely to be particularly acute this year, given the strain on public services and councils against a backdrop of the highest tax levels in decades.

Investigation into Dominic Raab

As part of his bid to restore credibility to the Conservative party, Sunak promised in his first speech on the steps of Downing Street to lead a government of “integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level”. He has already burnt through some political capital by being forced to sack Gavin Williamson, just weeks after handing him a Cabinet Office job, over bullying claims, and re-appointing Suella Braverman as home secretary despite her having breached the ministerial code. The next headache facing Sunak over standards concerns his deputy prime minister, Dominic Raab. Interviews by an independent investigator looking into bullying claims, which Raab denies, have begun. Allegations have piled up – with at least eight formal complaints about the justice secretary’s behaviour across three departments. Either Sunak will be forced to sack a close ally and again face questions about his own decision to appoint Raab, or stand by his deputy and risk more damaging leaks about alleged poor behaviour.

Education

Nick Gibb returned to cabinet in Sunak’s first reshuffle in his old job as schools minister. Many Tory figures with strong feelings about the exams system fear his return will halt their plans to push their proposed changes to the top of Sunak’s agenda. Moderate Tories who have previously advocated for year 6 exams to be scrapped are expected to launch a number of campaigns in the new year, putting pressure on Sunak and the education secretary, Gillian Keegan, to consider scrapping them or making them less formalised for entrance into secondary school.

Immigration

Get a grip on the Channel crisis or risk losing the election, Sunak has been warned since he got the keys to No 10. With Starmer striving to appear very tough on tackling the crisis, the prime minister faces intense pressure to ensure he can get the Rwanda policy over the line from his colleagues sitting on the right wing of the party. One senior Tory feared chaos would ensue over this issue, after speaking to the then former chancellor during the summer leadership contest. Sunak was asked by the moderate Tory on his ideas for solving the crisis, to which he struggled to respond with a straight answer. “He didn’t have a clue,” the source told the Guardian. Sunak faces mounting pressure from Boris Johnson and Priti Patel to resort to leaving the European convention on human rights in order to ensure the Rwanda scheme can run, but this would be extremely unlikely to be backed in a Commons vote.

Energy bills

Sunak and his chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, have vowed to be compassionate and help the poorest Britons as inflation and energy bills skyrocket. While households will receive support for bills until April 2024, the pair are yet to decide, and have even delayed making a decision, on how vulnerable businesses will fare, as there was no mention of support for small businesses beyond April 2023. A number of Tories in “red wall” seats have said businesses in their constituencies will go bust or be forced to close if they do not get guaranteed support. Sunak championed financial responsibility in the latest budget, and will want to avoid overspending. But even if he did lend support, it has been noted that it could not be more generous than what is currently in place, creating a significant headache in seats he will want to retain at the next election.

URI Kinesiology study aims to enhance back pain rehabilitation and improve back pain rehabilitation University of Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. -December. 19th, 2022back pain is the leading reason for skeletal muscle disabilities across the United States and across the world which affects millions of people each year. The estimates suggest that 50 to 75 percent of people within the U.S. will suffer it at the end of their lives.

University of Rhode Island Kinesiology graduate student Chrissie Wojciechowski is part of this unfortunate group. She sustained a major accident in her spine in the year 2019 when she was playing golf for the team in her undergrad years in Sacred Heart University. When she was performing a deadlift at the gymnasium, Wojciechowski herniated two disks in her lower spine and began a two-year rehabilitation process that included physical therapy sessions, and chiropractor appointments. This triggered an idea that resulted in her master’s thesis study of lower back pain.

Chrissie Wojciechowski

“I went through a lot of rehab trying to correct it without any surgical procedure and, when I was visiting chiropractors as well as other doctors I was receiving mixed message,” Wojciechowski said. “Some had told me that I could never do it again and others advised me not to even deadlift. There were a lot of different opinions on whether I should try deadlifting to heal it and improve the lower back stronger. It kind of set off my mind to ask: what do the spine appear as when someone deadlifts with an healthy back as opposed to someone with back pain or any kind in spinal disease?”

To discover, Wojciechowski began working with her advisor at the faculty level assistant professor Ryan Chapman, on a study that looked at back discomfort and exercise. They looked for volunteers suffering from back pain and those who have no pain, as a way of determining. The volunteers are questioned on their pain levels or absence of it and their levels of activity and routine workout routines. They are equipped with motion-capture sensors prior to Wojciechowski guides them through a range of exercises, including deadlifts, squats, walking as well as standing and sitting.

Wojciechowski monitors their movements on a computer monitor in real-time, capturing information from sensors and monitoring how the spine moves during exercises particularly deadlifting. “I’m trying to determine what I can visual detect prior to even looking at data, in order to determine whether I can tell the movement of the back,” she said.

Wojciechowski as well as Chapman are considering two kinds of back condition which are central and the radicular type, which is defined as pain that begins from the back. back and extending into those lower parts of the limbs which results in numbness and tingling sensations in the thighs, glutes, and sometimes deep into the feet or knees.

“No one has actually considered both of them and what we can do to improve the process of rehabilitation for the two distinct kinds of back pain,” Chapman said. “So we’re looking at these two groups and the way they move during various activities in our lab, such as walking or sitting or standing up, and finally, more exercise-specific actions. It is hoped that in the long run, whether we can identify distinctions or not, we will know how to manage these injuries differently depending on whether one form of move is more beneficial for one person than the other. The aim is to modify rehab according to the massive number of people suffering from moderate back discomfort and suffer in rehabilitation.”

The duo is conducting study in the college of health Sciences’ advanced Motion Analysis Laboratory, using the motion capture sensors along with treadmills that have built-in force plates that are located in the middle of the laboratory to determine the balance and force production. They also employ Electromyography (EMG) which is an assessment method to determine the condition of muscles as well as their nerve cells that regulate them. EMG determines the muscle are firing as well as the timing — whether muscles are firing in the correct time or whether there are any differences between those suffering from back pain.

Researchers are still looking for volunteers. Anyone experiencing back pain — especially radicular pain — and interested in participating can contact Wojciechowski at [email protected] or Chapman at [email protected]. Researchers are seeking people aged 18 to 50 who suffer from back discomfort and who have experienced the weight of lifting.

Wojciechowski continues to collect information for the study she intends to present as an honors dissertation for her master’s program. As time goes on, she’s hoping to continue the study which could impact the method by which back rehabilitation for pain is carried out.

“I would like to see rehabilitation evolving and to see whether we can longer term get patients out of physical therapy back to deadlifting and possibly incorporating it into rehabilitation,” Wojciechowski said. “It could allow us to investigate how the spine reacts to exercises like deadlifting or other for those suffering from spinal conditions or any kind of back discomfort.”
