Thiruvananthapuram: Education Minister V. Sivankutty told the gathering on Monday that schools in the state could be opened with central government approval. The schools will reopen gradually. He made it clear that the instructions of the central government and the committee of experts will be followed. He also announced that facilities will be set up in schools for this purpose by next month.

Knitting is the new hobby of actress Kirsten Storms, who recently went under the knife to fix a potentially life-threatening condition.

The 37-year-old used social media to undergo brain surgery to remove a fluid-filled cyst attached to the lower part of her brain.

To facilitate her smooth recovery, Storms announced that she is retiring from her role as Maxie Jones in the daytime drama General Hospital. The news has panicked fans, even as it encourages them to focus on their health and relax seamlessly.

RESOLVING “PERMITTED HEALTH PROBLEMS”

Storms spoke openly about her health complications in June, revealing that she had overlooked health issues over the years. Unfortunately, in the past few months, these seemingly random health problems have turned into more serious symptoms like neck pain and migraines, which forced them to have an MRI scan.

The test results showed the cyst that finally provided all the answers to Storms’ ongoing medical problems. Fortunately for her, the condition was recoverable as it was supposed to lead to serious complications.

Although the actress was admittedly nervous before the operation, she underwent the procedure two months after the discovery and successfully dated.

Storms RELY ON YOUR SUPPORT NETWORK

Kirsten Storms also thought about finding solace in family, friends and colleagues who supported her in the months leading up to her surgery.

On Friday, Los Angeles County Public Health officials confirmed 17 new deaths and 3,930 new cases of COVID-19 countywide, with 30,692 total cases in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The high number of new cases reflects significant increases in screening testing at businesses and schools.

Of the 17 new deaths reported today, one person who passed away was over the age of 80, six people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79, five people who died were between the ages of 50 and 64, and four people who died were between the ages of 30 and 49. One death was reported by the City of Long Beach.

To date, Public Health has identified 1,319,216 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County and a total of 24,756 deaths.

“We send our deepest condolences to everyone who has lost a loved one or friend to COVID-19,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health.

There are 1,370 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized and 22% of these people are in the ICU. This is an increase of 715 daily hospitalizations in two weeks.

Testing results are available for nearly 7,430,000 individuals with 16% of people testing positive. Today’s test positivity rate is 5.3%.

“The continued increase in cases serves as a stark reminder that responding to the infectious Delta variant requires adjustments if we want to slow the spread,” said Ferrer. “Let’s continue to enjoy time spent with our friends and family doing activities that bring us joy – but let’s do so adding back sensible protections. Wear a face mask when indoors and when in very crowded spaces outdoors. Move social gatherings outside and practice distancing when among unvaccinated people. If you can’t avoid sustained close contact with people you don’t know, consider upgrading your mask to a KN95 or respirator. And please, if you can get vaccinated, do so now to avoid being part of the surge.”

Public Health Ambassador Program

Public Health, in partnership with Los Angeles County school districts, offers the Public Health Ambassador Program for students and parents.

This partnership with Los Angeles County school districts actively engages members of school communities in preventing and reducing the spread of COVID-19 by empowering students and parents as essential partners in each school’s prevention effort.

The program includes training and activities with open enrollment beginning next week on Monday, Aug. 9 through Thursday, Sept. 9.

Public Health is encouraging students and parents to join the movement to inform others in your community about COVID-19 prevention and vaccines. Parent Ambassadors are trained on proven safety practices for home and in the broader community and Student Ambassadors meet weekly and learn about the impact of COVID-19 on wellbeing, social determinants of health, and how to promote safety among their peers.

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Friday Update

As of Friday, Aug. 6, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital had one test pending, 31 patients hospitalized, a total of 1,325 patients treated and discharged since the pandemic began, and no additional deaths, hospital spokesman Patrick Moody confirmed.

To date, there have been 153 deaths since the pandemic began.

Privacy laws prohibit Henry Mayo from releasing the community of residence for patients who die at the hospital; residence info is reported by the L.A. County Public Health COVID-19 dashboard, which generally lags 48 hours behind.

California Friday Snapshot

California Department of Public Health confirmed Friday 3,913,560 cases and 64,243 deaths to date.

Numbers may not represent true day-over-day change as reporting of test results can be delayed.

As of August 5, local health departments have reported 117,292 confirmed positive cases in health care workers and 482 deaths statewide.

There were 14,402 newly reported confirmed cases Thursday.

Cases are increasing statewide, largely among unvaccinated populations:

– For the week of July 31, the average case rate among unvaccinated Californians is 33 per 100,000 per day and the average case rate among vaccinated Californians is significantly lower at 7 per 100,000 per day.

– The vast majority of new cases are among the unvaccinated with 470% higher case rates among the unvaccinated than for those who are vaccinated.

The 7-day positivity rate is 7.1%.

There have been 74,870,934 tests conducted in California. This represents an increase of 250,620 during the prior 24-hour reporting period.

As of August 6, providers have reported administering a total of 44,479,024 vaccine doses statewide. The CDC reports that 50,339,575 doses have been delivered to entities within the state.

Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C)

Each week, the California Department of Public Health updates the number of cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) reported in the state.

As of August 2 there have been 589 cases of MIS-C have been reported statewide.

MIS-C is a rare inflammatory condition associated with COVID-19 that can damage multiple organ systems. MIS-C can require hospitalization and be life-threatening.

Parents should be aware of the signs and symptoms of MIS-C including fever that does not go away, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes, or feeling tired.

Although very rare, COVID-19 cases among children can sometimes result a few weeks later in very serious illness known as Multi-symptom Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C).

Vaccine Eligibility

Long gone are the days of straining your neck to check blind spots and your rear view as you drive in reverse. If your car was built before a certain point, you may not have that option unless you’re prepared to break the bank and get one installed.

What to look for in a backup camera

For starters, there are three main categories to consider: wired backup cameras, wireless backup cameras and smartphone backup cameras. Wired cameras are hooked to output screens with wires, which means the connection is stronger, but professional installation may be required. 

Wireless cameras are easy to install since there are no wires or cables connecting the camera to the monitor (there may still be cables connecting them to power sources), but the connection may be spotty, especially in bad weather. If you have continued problems with your screen capturing images from the camera, you’ll need to talk to a professional (and potentially even switch to a wired camera). Don’t be discouraged, though — any kind of camera can likely be fixed. “Take it to [a service center] to figure out what’s wrong with it,” advises Zoriy Birenboym, CEO of eAutoLease.com. Birenboym spent over 15 years in the auto industry as a salesman before founding the online auto leasing company. “It should be an easy fix if nothing is wrong with the wires.”

Smartphone cameras are wireless and use smartphones as displays, making them easier to use but also introducing even more potential connection issues. You also might want to consider your phone’s screen size. “Make sure the screen is large enough for you to get a clear view,” says Harry Anapliotis, marketing director and full stack developer at Rental Center Crete, a rental car agency that’s been serving the Greek island for over 45 years. “Its sole purpose is to show you what’s behind you, and it’s no good if you’re squinting to see the screen.”

There are also features available in certain backup cameras that might be important to you, and variations among different cameras. For instance, different cameras have different fields of view, which determine how wide of a lens angle you can see behind you. Typically, angles around 165 to 170 degrees are the maximum, while angles under 120 degrees are considered by some to be too narrow. The larger the angle, though, the more distorted the image will be on your screen.

Some cameras also provide night vision to help you see in darkness and low light, but there’s an efficacy difference between military-grade night vision and standard night vision. The latter often simply means that one or more infrared lights have been added to the camera. Finally, as mentioned earlier, you can have the footage recorded by the camera sent either to a screen in your console, a mounted screen, or an inset in your rearview mirror. You can pick whichever you prefer, but a dashboard or mounted screen will offer a larger image.

You also might need to moderate your hunt based on your vehicle. You can add a rear camera to just about any vehicle, but the details may change. For instance, many RV owners are particularly interested in backup cameras due to the difficulty that comes with maneuvering such large vehicles in reverse, but they may have to adjust their expectations in terms of cost and capability.

Like with cars, RV cameras come in wired, wireless and smartphone varieties, but the connection between the cameras and screens in wireless models may be particularly unreliable in large vehicles, as the distance between them is increased. Likewise, a wired camera may cost more to install than it would in a car because of the size of the vehicle. RV cameras should also be mounted higher than they would be on a regular car, with nine feet off the ground considered ideal.

In some ways, though, all cameras are the same. For instance, the quality of the view and the picture depends on your connection, and some brands have a reputation for higher performance than others do. For car backup cameras, popular brands include Auto-Vox, Yada and LeeKooLuu. When it comes to RV cameras, some of the brands frequently cited as the best include Rear View Safety, 4Ucam and Furrion.

Finally, it’s important to remember that backup cameras come with their own rules. While they make driving in reverse easier and safer, they still can’t provide complete, 360-degree visibility (no matter what they claim), so it’s crucial to use your mirrors and remain attentive while you drive. There are also ways to wire your camera so that it’s on all the time, including when you’re driving forward — but is it worth it? You’ll get a better view of what’s going on behind your car, but it may also present a distraction while you drive, rather than help your view as it does when going in reverse.

What to expect to spend on — and get from — a backup camera

Price is a major concern when selecting a backup camera, and prices can vary widely. Based on a number of factors, such as the type and brand of camera and whether or not you already have a dashboard screen, they can range from $10 to $500, or even more for larger vehicles. The cost simply depends on the equipment you need and the equipment you already have. This is evident in the way cameras for sale are typically grouped — they’re sold as camera units that hook to existing screens, individual components, and all-in-one systems.

Installation is another concern. If you plan to install your camera on your own, make sure to set aside 3 hours for the job. If you need professional installation, that can set you back an additional $400 to $600. Before you make your decision, it’s important to remember that the most reliable backup wired cameras are also the most difficult to install. That said, the money and hard work can be worth it — if you get the right backup camera, install it properly, and take care of it, it can provide you with 10 years of safer driving. “It might get outdated and not have all the best features,” says Birenboym, “but it should have enough life to last that long.”

“People report backup cameras lasting anywhere between a month to 10 years, which tells us that what we really need when looking for a backup camera is something that is sturdy, and something that comes with a warranty (just in case)!” says Michael Lowe, CEO of Car Passionate. “The hope is that the camera will last as long as you own the car, but cars are sturdy, and cameras not as much. So when you are buying, it’s worth considering whether [the camera] comes in a protective case that can help protect against mishaps or falls. Aside from all the snazzy features, what you want is a product that does what it says on the tin and can last the distance.”

If you’ve decided you want to install your camera yourself but you’re intimidated by the prospect of the job, you should consider a license plate backup camera. Some of these wireless backup camera systems are mounted in license plate holders, while others can easily be attached to your existing holder. You’ll need to have a screen as well, whether it’s an existing one in your dashboard or a mounted monitor. Some of the most well-regarded license plate backup camera brands are LeeKooLuu and Esky.

A backup camera can be a large expense or a minor one, but possessing the necessary knowledge will help you make a fitting investment. In the end, what’s most important is that you’ll be driving more safely.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – A local chiropractor said she saw an increase in patient numbers as many still work from home and sit in uncomfortable positions.

The effects of the pandemic are still far-reaching, as if it were on people’s backs.

“I had my office closed for two weeks and immediately got calls from patients who were normal maintenance patients who didn’t really come in pain and suddenly they came in with a lot of pain,” said Dr. Heather Bourdon, owner of Unbroken Chiropractic.

Bourdon is a chiropractor in Crossroads. She said the pandemic puts a strain on your back because of that one culprit.

“Low back pain, neck pain, hip pain, these are the biggest ones I’ve seen and I think it was because of poor ergonomics in the workplace,” said Bourdon. “People sat at their kitchen countertops or their couches, or wherever it was convenient, to get some rest from their children, too.”

The calls to her office kept coming.

“I was really surprised at the increase in pain just because they sat at home and didn’t move as much as possible,” said Bourdon.

But, she said there are ways to help your back and other body parts when they’re in pain, things someone at home can do if they’re not sure about getting to an office like yours – starting with a ball.

“Place the ball between your shoulder and spine and just go against the wall, take your arm over your body, add a little stretch, and then just roll it up and down,” said Bourdon.

She shows several other moves for the home in the video above. But their biggest advantage is staying active and getting up as often as possible.

“Whether it’s getting up during a phone call, I know people use Zoom a lot more. If you get the chance to walk around, go for a walk, try to have more time to get up and walk all day, ”said Bourdon. “Not just at the end of the day or during lunch break. That’s probably the best.”
