Dr Arvind Bhateja, a neurologist who has recently taken to Instagram to explain the brain’s relationship with pain and pain receptors, let us know about this fascinating aspect.


When do you generally feel pain?

Dr Bhateja said that you feel pain when your pain receptors “stimulated”, and a signal transmitted, which interprets the stimulus as painful.


The brain does not contain any pain receptors. Why (and how) are headaches caused?

Dr Bhateja says that even though the brain doesn’t have any pain receptors the head does, including the ears, nose, sinuses and the teeth. “The skull bones and the covering of the brain (also known as meninges), along with the pain-receptors are also ,” said Dr Sudhir Kumra, a neurosurgeon.

The most interesting fact about brain surgery is that it can be performed with the patient awake, since there are no pain receptors in the brain. The surgeon uses local sedation to cut through the scalp, skull bones and meninges. After that, the surgery is painless. These surgeries are only performed if the surgeon is operating a vital part of the brain that is involved in speech or memory.

Dr Pradyumna, director of Neurology at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital in Mumbai, agreed that while the brain does not have pain receptors (nociceptors), “the sensation that a migraine is present comes from the structures around the brain”.

Headaches are caused by the activation around the brain of pain-sensitive structures, such as vessels and muscles in the head and neck area. – Treating chronic back pain with an alternative to pills and surgery

Back pain is one of the most common reasons that people visit a doctor, or miss work. Back pain can be a dull, constant pain or a sudden, sharp, or shooting pain.

There are two types back pain: acute or short-term pain that lasts from a few days up to a couple of weeks. Self-care usually helps it resolve on its own in a few days and there is no permanent loss of function. Chronic back pain is defined as pain that persists for more than 12 weeks, even after the initial injury or underlying cause has been treated.

Dr Janice Simmonds-Fisher is the chief executive officer and founding director of Bio-Regeneration Integrated Medical Centre. She says chronic back pain can be debilitating and have a significant impact on a person’s life.

“Not great because we really like parking at the valet parking at Trulux when we come downtown, and now it’s blocked, and they tell us it’s going to be blocked for next season,” Collis said.

But not only will the closure cause a hassle to some when it comes to parking, Cilia Podley, the general manager at PJK Neighborhood Chineses, said she has been seeing business declining ever since the sign went up. Podley also noticed unfamiliar cars on the side of the building.

“We have seen a little bit of slow down in business, and I’ve noticed parking on our side to get onto Fifth Avenue,” Podley said.

But, Podley is hopeful people will find a way to make it to the restaurant as the closure is expected to last for months.

“We try to be really positive here and hope people find other places to park or drive and come see us,” Podley said.

The road is scheduled to be closed until Dec., but the Naples Players said they’re working with the city to open the road during special events and high-traffic dates like July 4, as long as it’s safe to do so.

I can’t recall a time that my neck and shoulders felt good. My family bought our first computer in middle school and, after a teen debate with my parents, we got a cell-phone in high school. By my calculations, my posture has been a mess since about 25 years.

My neck pain became unbearable in my 20s when I started spending most of my day bent over a computer. I would sneak out of my office and go to a nail salon nearby to get a 10-to-15-minute neck and shoulders massage for about $1 per minute. It was life-changing. But in recent years, I’ve accepted that 1) I can’t afford to spend that much money; and 2) neck strain is a normal part of life, just like eating, sleeping, and breathing.

If you can relate to this, it’s likely that we both have “tech neck,” which is a painful musculoskeletal condition caused by the chronic stress on necks from looking down at devices and poor posture. Up to 40% of people are estimated to suffer from neck pain that is caused by scrolling down, texting or typing. This pain can be dull and achy or sharp and throbbing. It can be localized to the neck, or travel down your back and even reach your shoulders.

Erich Anderer MD, chief neurosurgeon at NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn, explains to SELF that your spine is a delicate interplay between bones, soft tissues, and ligaments. This can easily go out of balance, especially if you are glued to a device all day. Dr. Anderer explains that your head weighs between 10 and 12 pounds. When you tilt it downward (like you do when you text), you put pressure on your neck. “When you have strain on your neck, or anything else that throws your alignment out of balance,” he says, it can manifest as pain.

Dr. Anderer says that neck strain may seem inevitable depending on how addicted you are to your devices (I speak for myself). But most people who suffer from tech neck can find relief by using a few simple techniques. Here are four to try.

Reset your posture

Most tech-neck advice is centered around correcting posture. It’s a good thing (after all, the complication of tech neck stems from constantly looking at devices), but it’s not realistic to sit up straight all day with your head directly above your spine. Dr. Anderer explains that “our lives are set up to encourage this bad ergonomic posture.” If you work on a factory floor or at a desk for example, there’s no good position to keep your neck in all day.

This is to say: Do not beat yourself up for having bad posture most of the time. We’re all in the same boat. If you suddenly realize that you are hunched like a gargoyle while doing your thing, it may be helpful to reset yourself. A 2021 study found that changing your posture and moving around can help reduce neck discomfort.

Great Yarmouth Mercury – Hopton man Mark Riley died after using cocaine to treat headache –

The estate agent who sold the property to Mark Riley found him dead in the mother’s house in Hopton-on-Sea.

Inquests held in Norwich revealed that the 46-year old died from ketoacidosis, cocaine toxicity and was discovered dead on his sofa.

It was reported that he began to lose weight in the last few months of his life and suffered from severe headaches.

James Harvey, who called Mr Riley “a brother”, said that he last saw him on Friday, 23 September.

He said that his friend told him many times that he suffered from severe headaches, which would only disappear if he drank alcohol or took cocaine.

Kelly Wall, Riley’s ex-partner, told the court Riley complained of headaches and that his health was deteriorating during the months before his death.

Ms Wall, who had a daughter with Mr Riley before their amicable split, said that she had encouraged him to go to a doctor when they last met on a trip to London less than a week before his death.

She said: “I’ve never seen him look as sick as he looked the last time I saw.

Inquest heard that Mr Riley from Romford had moved to Norfolk in order to care for his mother who lived in Hopton-on-Sea.

After her death, the man decided to sell her home and move to Essex to start a removals company.

He was found dead on Sunday, 25th September, after concerns about his well-being were raised. The estate agent used a spare key to allow police entry into the property.
