Boston, Massachusetts — There could soon be a brand new treatment option for those suffering from migraine headaches via nasal spray.
The FDA has approved Pfizer’s newest nasal spray, Zavzpret to treat acute migraine.
It is true that there are nasal sprays available on the market , however unlike many this spray is believed to be safe for those with high risk factors for heart disease and shouldn’t trigger overuse headaches similar to the way some medications might.
In research which examined the effectiveness of the spray, it was found to be better than a placebo when it came to alleviating pain and other migraine-related symptoms. Patients were more likely to experience normal functioning 30 minutes to two hours after using the spray.
The drug is expected to be available in July.
